The Narrows - 1

Zion National Park, UT

The Narrows is the granddaddy of slot canyons created by the north fork of the Virgin River over millions of years as it eroded through the sandstone. The towering vertical walls are 1,300 feet high and only 60 feet wide in places through this 16 mile canyon. Hiking The Narrows is an adventure in that the entire hike is the Virgin River where you wade through water that can be anywhere from ankle to chest deep. Since it is a slot canyon it is highly subject to flash flooding and the water flows can vary greatly from day-to-day based on upriver weather. The twists and turns of the river offer outstanding photographic opportunities as the sunlight reflects off the red sandstone walls.
